  • Ones Basketball League Takes Over Chenny

It was OBL day at CAW and it was spectacular. This 1v1 tournament is a hit with everyone at Chenny and I personally along with OBL creator NBA Hall of Famers Tracy McGrady couldn’t be more excited. The energy on camp was electric and from sunrise to sunset it was all about 1v1 basketball. We had 3 stars of The Ones Basketball League join us and spend the day at Chenny and our campers and staff loved every single moment. Zac Radz, John Jordan and Isiah “Leaky Roof” Brown loved the day as much as the campers and staff.  All three players star in the upcoming Showtime Docu-series, Bonded By Ball: Inside the OBL that is set to be released on July 28th on Showtime and Paramount +. We showed the trailer to all of camp and it added to the amazing vibe that was in every cornet at Chenny today.

The 1v1 trend is real and Biddy City was poppin’ with tournaments all day long. We had camper tournaments throughout the day as each division had players representing them and battling it out on the court. It was so exciting and so much fun and then for our evening activity the staff got into the action and played their own 1v1 tournament. The campers got behind their counselors and magic was made. So much good energy blanketed camp today and it just felt like one of those days you cant forget.

As if we couldn’t get enough basketball, we had our 3 incredible OBL ball players join our staff game against Camp Wayne for Boys and the late night game was more exciting that the NBA Finals. We let Inters, Collegiates, Seniors, Supers, GC’s and CIT’s stay up and watch the staff game. If your camper is in one of those divisions,  I encourage you to ask them about tonight’s staff game. It was a night that truly blew us all away. I cant quite find the right words to describe the energy in Shields Hall but I am so glad we all got to experience it. Chenny won the game but I think everyone won tonight. Even the players from Wayne stayed after to take pictures with these three phenoms. It became pretty evident early on that  Chenny definitely had some ringers. Electric is how you can describe our day and 1v1 basketball has been embraced by everyone here at  Chenny!!!

  • & Song

The sun was out in full force today and you could feel the excitement. Every area of camp was full of happy campers. From ATV’s to gaga and everything in between was full of campers who had smiles on their faces and a sense of appreciation to be outside all day long playing with their friends. We have been here for a week and everyone has settled into their routine. Waking up to bugles and heading into the Lodge for breakfast in our jammies is what we do and feels like we’ve been doing this together for a lot longer than 7 days. The day was as close to perfect as perfect can get. When we see our campers engaged, happy, connected and at ease, there is nothing that fills a parents heart more than that. We hope that the pictures and videos tell that story, that your children are engaged, happy, connected, at ease and feeling free.

We had a full day of games and matches  and are super proud of all our hardworking talented Chenny athletes.

Congratulations to Brady Bornstein who won a tennis tournament at Island Lake today,
The night belonged to our long-standing Chenny tradition, Sign & Song. This is night where each bunk creates a plaque with every name of every camper and counselor living in that bunk which will be hung there for the rest of time. In every bunk there are plaques that date back decades and gives us a window to what it was like back then and it mirrors what will be for kids coming through Chenny now. Some things change and some stay the same and Sign & Song will always stay the exact same at Camp Chen-A-Wanda, that you can bank on. After plaque presentation, it was the Song portion of the night and this is where each bunk on Girls side performs a dance. Each group got up on that stage and danced their hearts out. From our cutest and most adorable Freshman all the way through our beautifully talented CIT’s, they rocked the house and had a ball. As each girls bunk danced with smiles on their faces, boys side stood on their seats with standing ovations. When one of us takes the stage, everyone at Chenny is there to back them up. This is why we call ourselves a family in every sense of the word, we are!!. Congratulations goes to tonights winners:

Lower Camp Boys Plaque Winner goes to Bunk F

Upper Camp Boys Plaque Winner goes to Bunk W

Lower Camp Girls Plaque Winner goes to Bunk G

Upper Camp Girls Plaque Winner goes to Bunk W

Lower Camp SONG goes to the ladies of Bunk L and Upper Camp SONG was awarded to the girls of Bunk W.

IT WAS A CIT SWEEP tonight and they deserved it. From their costumes, to their make-up to their choreography to their awesome camp spirit.  They were mesmerizing and so in unison. This group of incredible young women understood the assignment.  The work and effort they put into their performance mirrors their dedication and loyalty to one another. It is a group that came together so beautifully and created a memory they will forever remember and cherish. They are the best of the best and deserved the Win.  The tears were running down their faces as they came to the realization that tonight was the last Sign & Song of their camper career.  It was a night they will never forget. Our beautiful CIT’s dominated the stage tonight and shared their love of Chenny with us all.

  • It’s Cool To Be Kind

The highlight of our day was our night as we restarted a new tradition with Awards at the Amphitheater. After being here for one week, we have some amazing campers that have shined bright and it’s their turn to be recognized for being outstanding. We wanted to bring the entire camp together for this new Chenny tradition as we honor our Campers of the Week and our Kind Campers. The atmosphere was electric with sing-a-longs and dance parties galore even before the night started. To be named Camper of the Week is an honor that anyone who receives this award should feel deep pride from their toes to their nose. As every name was called, you can hear the chants and cheers from bunk mates and counselors, celebrating their friends who received this amazing honor. Campers of the week are selected by their Division Heads who look for a well rounded, helpful, kind, positive, inclusive camper who participates and inspires those around them. A huge congratulations to our Week 1 Campers of the Week.

To be a Kind Camper is to be selfless and thoughtful, to have empathy and compassion for those around you. It is to be kind to others with no anticipation of anything in return. At Chenny, our Kind Campers are nominated, not by staff but by their peers. That makes this award so incredibly special as being nominated means they made their friends feel good and there is just no better compliment than that. It costs nothing to be kind and the payback is immense. We know you at home who find their children’s name, in the list below will feel a sense of pride and you should. You have kind children and our community is so lucky have them as they are making a difference spreading kindness all throughout camp. Congratulations to all our Kind kids!!

  • Friday Night Lights

When you think of sports and competition at home it tends to be cut throat and intense. There are endless hours of practice, upset feelings when our kids don’t make the travel team and stress the players feel when they hear parents an onlookers coach them from the sidelines. It couldn’t be more opposite here. There is competition yes but the entire focus on playing sports at camp is all about the joy of playing, nothing more nothing less. When you think about our kids playing a sport just for the joy of playing, it makes sense and it can inspire them rather than deflate them. Today we hosted Camp Westmont for the first games of our summer season. Our kids played great and had a ball, they actually won every single game they played. But that wasn’t the story of the day. The Inter Boys were playing baseball and for the most part, Chenny was trailing until that last play as one of our kids hit a 2 run home-run to win the game for us.  Chenny kids were going crazy with excitement as boys were running the bases and coming into home plate . The pitcher for Camp Westmont broke down and was visibly distraught. You could see how he felt responsible for giving up those 2 runs that gave Chenny the win. He had a very tough moment and our kids noticed he was struggling. Everybody there could see his struggle. Their coach wasn’t having any luck helping this kid who was breaking down but our kids, our team noticed and a handful of the boys walked over to him and said, ” It’s all good, you pitched a great game.”  One camper said, “your team is really good. I hope we can play you again this summer.” Our boys celebrated the win but were able to help someone out that needed it with a few words of encouragement. I was so glad to be there and to see that moment. The win was great but seeing our kids with incredible character was everything!!!

Middy Boys Tennis – Chen-A-Wanda vs. Westmont 3-2 win
Inter Boys Baseball –  Chen-A-Wanda vs. Westmont 6-5 win
Senior Boys Basketball – Chen-A-Wanda vs. Westmont 35-34 win
Super Boys Soccer – Chen-A-Wanda vs. Westmont 7-1 win

Powder Puff is a camper favorite evening activity and tonight didn’t disappoint.  Friday Night Lights came to life tonight at Chenny and it was an incredible game to watch. Girls side was feeling fierce, powerful, strong and ready as our GC ‘s and CIT’s played an intense game of flag football.  CIT’s were dressed in all black and GC’s in all white. The boys in each division were the cheerleaders and they got the crowd on their feet. It was a great night of flag football and we all had a fantastic time outside under the lights. The competition was intense and each team brought it tonight. . There were great plays, interceptions, long passes and incredible defense. The kids had a ball watching the girls on the grid iron. CIT’s brought home the victory with a 9-7 win. After the whistle blew and the game ended, every camper rushed the filed in celebration for the CITS and their last play of the game that brought them the W. A huge congratulations to Brooke Gordon, tonight’s MVP who dominated and helped bring home the win for our CIT’s.

Feeling pretty lucky that we get to do another incredible day at Camp Chen-A-Wanda, tomorrow!!!!!

  • Sunny Daze

It was a beautiful day here at Chenny. Not a raindrop in sight. The sun was shining today and felt as if it was shining down on just us.  There is no difference between how a Thursday feels or a Saturday does up here at Chenny. No concept of time other than hearing the bugles and announcements that direct us where we need to be. I often say how “free” we are up here but it is a word that truly depicts what it feels like to live here all summer long. There is no time to feel bored, no opportunities to sit and watch Netflix or stare at a screen for hours on end. Our days a packed with things to do and relationships to build.

A first year counselor approached me after dinner with tears in her eyes and asked me “how does this place make me feel this way?” She explained that dancing in front anyone was something she would never do. She relayed how she is painfully shy and would never in a million years dance or sing in front of anyone, even her family. She said how free she feels here and couldn’t believe this piece existed inside of her. She danced with co-counselors and sang with her campers at the top of her lungs during dinner tonight – I know this because I was watching her transform into someone who was so very different when she arrived at camp. She was guarded and quiet and kept to herself. It was like watching a flower blossom. She felt free and let go of those insecurities. I explained to her that this is what happens here – you are truly allowed to be exactly who you are here without judgement. She left the Lodge with her campers surrounding her, holding her hands and feeling just as limitless she she did. That is the power of this place. We let go, we trust and then we fly.

We are as good as our team and our team is beyond incredible. They have blown our minds with their contagious energy and  insane amounts of camp spirit. Even just meeting our newest campers just 5 days ago, they have fallen for every kid on this camp.  To watch a counselor walk though camp holding hands with an 8 year old camper they just met last Saturday, is witnessing magic, pure magic. I am always so amazed at how quick the bonds are formed but when our hearts are open to new people coming into our lives, the results are meaningful and impacts us all.

Tonights evening activity was Dueling Pianos and the sing-a-long party was epic. There is something about 2 pianos, a hyped up staff and campers who love to sing at the top of their lungs that makes for a great night. The party was high energy and so much fun. Just another incredible night.

It was another day living well, happy and free at Camp Chen-A-Wanda!

  • For the Love of The Game

Our Chenny athletes took to the fields and courts with more team tryouts happening all throughout the day. Enrichments started as well so our campers who want more specialized time in basketball, baseball and soccer enjoyed their enrichment periods learning and playing more in their favorite sports. Playing sports at Chenny is so much fun. The focus is on learning and playing. There is no stress, no pressure, just a focus on skills and sportsmanship. There are no disappointed coaches or stressed out players worrying about really anything. Our games are played for the literal love of the game. Having my own kids involved in school and travel sports I am aware of how those programs at home can leave our kids stressed and more worried about being perfect rather than just loving to play a game. We want to provide our kids a place to fall in love with a sport and the opportunity to learn skills that make them better but ultimately we want our campers to just play and walk off the courts and fields having had a great time.

It appears that the we have a lot of very talented singers, actors and dancers with us this summer. Auditions for our summer show, Matilda began today. We are anticipating a show of all shows. The excitement for this production is at an all time high. The campers have taken their auditions seriously and are rehearsing together and all are committed to making this years show, one to remember!!! You can be anything and everything you want to be here at Chenny.  The choice is theirs and that is where I believe the magic is at. A Junior boy came to me and asked if he can audition for the play and also tryout for the baseball team. I said yes, of course you can do both to which he replied, “Best Day Ever.” Why choose when you can have two things in your life that make you happy.

The great camp vibes of the day continued into our evening activity, The Hustler Game Show.  The campers competed in this trivia game of deception, clues and truths. It was so much fun watching our campers up on stage playing for their bunks to claim victory but only 3 bunks can call themselves Hustler Champions. It was a boys side sweep – Congratulations to Boys Bunks, J, N and P. They are the official Chenny Hustler Champions each winning an Italian Dinner party for their bunks!!!!

    5 nights down 43 to go !!!

  • ‘s Picture Day

All  campers and staff got dressed in their camp T’s today,  looking gorgeous to take their bunk pictures. Everyone looked great, cheerful and excited to capture the moment of their 2023 summer.  These bunk photos are forever and they will represent that special summer spent at Camp Chen-A-Wanda. After the morning of photos, it was off to activities.

If you wan to see the cutest thing ever, you would need to be watching our freshman girls crush the new Ninja Warrior course. They had the best time and loved it. These girls were strong and powerful and they felt so great as they dominated the course. The campers are absolutely going bonkers for Ninja. It is a great addition this summer and Chenny Ninjas could not be happier.

If you want to see the energy, spirit and vibe at camp right now, I urge you to take a peek at our Instagram and watch our story. Those brief snip-its of tonight’s staff talent show was SPECTACULAR. There is just nothing better than having staff show off their incredible talents and hear their campers cheer with pride. It was magic in Shields Hall tonight your kids loved every minute of it. We have such a talented group of people and they proudly put that on display tonight. As the show ended and all the campers left the Hall, it appeared as if they all were floating. What a night!!

  • Days Like This

Where can you find a group of 14 year old boys sitting around a table playing card games for an hour? N0 phones, no Netflix, no distractions. Just 6 boys and a deck of cards and good conversation. I walked into the canteen and found this scene play out for me today. We had some rain so the kids moved inside for activities. I don’t know the game they were playing and it didn’t matter. It was the company they kept and how a deck of cards allowed these boys to find joy and humor and ultimately friendship in these moments that happen daily here.  You are just an ask away from sitting in a group of friends, making memories and connections that will ultimately impact your life in the most positive way. It’s the simple things that make the most impact and sometimes a game of palace with your buddies can blow away all the video games they play alone at home. Our kids are hungry for these connections and it is joyful watching them dive in and play. Not even a rainy day can get in the way of the magic that happens here.

After a full day of play, the evening was all about being entertained and Chenny didn’t disappoint. There was love in the air with our camp tradition of The Dating Game. From the Freshman to our CIT’s there were bachelors and bachelorettes asking hilarious and sweet questions and the answers were even better. We laughed from our bellies and had a night that was incredible. It’s days like this that make camp the most incredible experience and why we fall in love with this place. Best news is we get to it all over again tomorrow.

  • Sunday Funday

Our first full day was full of wonder, sunshine and smiles. New campers were learning the Chenny ropes and it didn’t take long for them to know where everything is. Only one day and our new kids looked as if they have been here forever.  The sun was shining bright today and camp was a playground full of happy campers. After the morning of swim tests, it was right to activities and our Chenny kids were so incredibly happy. Your kids jumped right in and didn’t waste a moment. They left those devices and remotes at home and played outside…ALL DAY LONG. Our fields were packed with kids playing and more importantly, kids smiling and laughing. I watched a group of Super boys have a catch in center camp. No words were spoken but so much was communicated. Maybe it was the peaceful look on their faces or the fact that these connections are so easily recaptured even after being away from one another for months. They tossed a ball and just enjoyed being with each other. It is the best part of watching your kids – Seeing them connect in the most real and authentic way. It takes my breath away every time I see it and it fills my heart with gratitude that they can find that connection here. It’s effortless and easy and exactly what they need. The stress from school, tests, crazy schedules, home friend drama and of course the pressures from social media all faded away. This place makes you feel great from the inside out.

It didn’t take long for our new kids to feel the love too. They may have just rolled into camp but the feeling is contagious and our newest Chenny kids embraced the day to its fullest. To witness how quick our newest kids took to this place was pure magic. The bonds are being created and new friendships are blossoming. It was just an absolute incredible day at Chenny. When our world gets bigger, our world gets better and for our new kids their world just got whole a lot bigger. Everyone here is just so excited to meet the newest Chenny kids and they are most definitely feeling the LOVE. This is how we become one camp family.

It was Round Robin for evening activity which means each division had their own special activity and the kids had a ball. From dogeball to slip and slide to cake wars to homerun derby to just name a few, tonight was out of this world fun. Tonights divisional activities allowed each group to bond, to connect, to get to know one another better and of course to have an incredible time. Mission accomplished!

Our first official full day of summer 2023 is in the books and if today was any indication of what is to come in these next seven weeks, we are in for one incredible summer.

  • Our House Is Full

What an incredible day it was. Perfect in every way. Though rain was in our forecast, as soon as the buses rolled into camp those grey clouds literally parted and out came the sun. It was miraculous and of course the sun was shining bright at Chenny today because your kids arrived!! They jumped off those buses and summer began. The music, the welcome posters, the chants, the cheers, the hugs, and the energy, made today magical. Everyone felt the excitement and it was incredible.

It didn’t take long for new friendships to be made. Everywhere you look, the reasons why you send your children to camp were in full display. A whole bunch of new people have just entered you child’s world and their arms are wide open. Everyone looked so happy to be here, from our CIT’s on the Hill to the cutest, tiniest freshman. We all share the same goal – To have the most incredible summer together!

In true Chenny tradition, we all enjoyed spaghetti and meatballs for dinner and of course a giant dance party was happening in The Lodge. Your kids sang at the top of their lungs. They stood on the tables as they danced and sang. Boys side and  girls side, they all were ready for the first dinner and they brought the energy. It was off the charts amazing.   After dinner, everyone headed to Shields Hall for our opening night. A packed house, full of spirit and excitement was where you kids spent their evening. The smiles on their faces said it all. It was an absolutely perfect evening that kicked off Summer. 2023. So off we go to have the summer of our lives and as I told them tonight, they all deserve what is in front of them – A summer that will leave a mark on their hearts forever and it is our absolute pleasure and honor to provide that for your children. Our team is ready and we truly don’t know who is more excited, the staff or the campers.

Enjoy your summer and we will take it from here. Thank you for your support and belief in us and we hope to send your kids back in 49 days a bit more independent, more self confident, capable to navigate through things that challenge them, with a ton more friends and memories that last throughout their lifetime.
